Sunderland fans in travel chaos as major issue emerges en route to Wembley
Sunderland fans are heading to Wembley for the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United, but travel chaos has hit the M1.
Régis Le Bris’ side are aiming to secure Premier League promotion for the first time since their 2017 relegation.
As more than 40,000 Mackems fans descend on the capital to support their side, they will take various routes to Wembley.
The M1, one of the main routes to Wembley, runs through the centre of the country and is heavily used.

Travel chaos for Sunderland fans on the M1
Sunderland fans, who have experienced numerous ticketing issues, have hit travel chaos on a road near the M1 as a reported standstill has delayed many Mackems fans.
According to Sunderland Global Media on Facebook (23 May), the standstill was caused by an overturned lorry, bringing traffic to a complete halt.
Some fans even stepped out of their vehicles for fresh air while waiting for the overturned lorry to be cleared.
However, with a full day left to reach the capital, fans still have plenty of time to arrive at Wembley.

Régis Le Bris’s side on the cusp of history
As Sunderland return to Wembley for the 11th time, Le Bris will want his side to fully embrace the occasion.
Fans in the stadium will hope for another unforgettable moment like Daniel Ballard’s last-minute winner against Coventry.
Winning and returning to the Premier League could bring Sunderland a £170million boost, transforming the club’s future.
However, staying in the Premier League could be tough, as all three promoted teams have been relegated in the last two seasons.
Reported new investment from stakeholders could help Sunderland attract top players to stay in the Premier League next season.
Le Bris and his team’s first challenge is beating Sheffield United at Wembley and winning promotion.
