Sunderland fans cruelly compare Brian Brobbey to Gus Poyet flop after Crystal Palace draw

Sunderland supporters finally got to see Brian Brobbey in action against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

In a match with little action, Robin Roefs was the star performer for Sunderland, having pulled off some expert saves.

Mike Dean reacted to a rare incident at Selhurst Park, with Christantus Uche denied a penalty by the referee.

Brobbey came on as a second-half substitute but was unable to make an impact in the 0-0 draw.

Brian Brobbey compared to Sunderland flop Jozy Altidore

When he was first spotted in the North East, Sunderland supporters commented on the sheer size of Brobbey.

The Netherlands international came on in the 69th minute for Simon Adingra as Regis Le Bris tried to mix up his options.

However, the forward was unable to make an impact, which led to him being compared to Altidore.

One fan on X said: “God took Simms and Altidore, mixed the two to make one, and he came up with Brian Brobbey.”

Another added, not long after: “Not to be too cynical. But Brobbey gives me Altidore vibes.”

On the other hand, some supporters offered their support for the 23-year-old and inferred that he just needs time.

One supporter said: “On Brobbey, there just wasn’t enough to judge him on right now. Showed his strength a bit but had a couple of wayward touches and passes.”

Why Brian Brobbey will not want to be compared to Jozy Altidore

For those who can remember, Altidore was one of the more underwhelming signings Sunderland have made in the Premier League era.

Much was expected of the United States international, but he ended his time in the North East having made little impact.

Gus Poyet was the striker’s manager during his time on Wearside and spoke openly about his efforts in 2014.

“He just couldn’t find the net. Sometimes it happens. You change clubs, and you cannot do it at one club for whatever reason,” Poyet said via NBC Sports.

Comparisons between the two were inevitable given that they both enjoyed success before moving from the Eredivisie.

However, Brobbey must be afforded time to show the Wearside faithful exactly what he can do.
