Sunderland enter race for Emil Holm transfer as £13.8m decision made

Sunderland are one of several Premier League clubs keen on a deal for Emil Holm.

A win against Chelsea on Sunday could change a lot of things for Sunderland, and that would include their summer transfer business.

The Black Cats will be in need of more depth if they are to be in European football next season, with more defensive options certainly set to be needed.

Holm has spent the second half of the season on loan at Juventus, but he has been limited to just seven appearances across all competitions.

Juventus had the option to sign the Swede for a reported £13.8million, though it’s claimed they will turn down the chance, with the right-back potentially set for a move to the Premier League instead.

Who is Emil Holm?

Holm is not exactly a household name in English football, though he is well known for his time in Italy, and most notably with Bologna.

The 26-year-old joined them in 2024, where he has since made 40 appearances across all competitions, and with Juventus unlikely to buy him for the £13.8million fee this summer, it is also where he will be returning.

But for how long remains to be seen, with il Resto del Carlino reporting that a move to the Premier League is on the cards, with Sunderland one of three clubs keen.

Everton and Crystal Palace are also said to be monitoring his future, which may not be decided until after the World Cup, after he was called up to the Sweden squad.

Where would Holm fit in at Sunderland?

Sunderland have had options defensively, though a large portion of them have seen players feature away from their natural position.

That will need to change if European football is achieved, with Holm then likely to compete with Nordi Mukiele for a starting spot at right-back.

Lutsharel Geertruida’s future remains uncertain, though given the number of times he has featured there this season, Holm may be his replacement if a deal can be struck.
