Sunderland ‘door wide open’ to sign Henderson as Niall Quinn speaks out

Jordan Henderson was at Wembley to watch his boyhood Sunderland finally return to the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Achieving promotion against Sheffield United saw the seven-year absence end at the Stadium of Light, with Regis Le Bris leaving his name in history.

Two late goals from Eliezer Mayenda and Tom Watson sent the Mackems’ fans into wild celebrations as they watched the Black Cats return to the biggest stage with a 2-1 victory.

Sunderland are already looking to strengthen for their Premier League return, with Henderson a possible signing after his disappointing end to the season at Ajax.

Henderson could be on Sunderland’s radar

Henderson watched from the Wembley stands with pride as his former team and boyhood club secured a memorable promotion.

Speaking on talkSPORT following the win, Niall Quinn believes that the former Liverpool captain would be welcome back to the Black Cats immediately after promotion.

He said: “I had it from the day Jordan left, and Liverpool paid us the goods of £20million from back in the day, and there was a big, wide door open for him whenever he wanted to come back. It’s not my business to do anything but just comment on that.

“I think he’s been a credit to the game. His hard work and, I suppose, his team play, he’s a real sort of driver.”

Henderson could be a valuable signing for Sunderland in midfield next season, though they’d need to lure him away from his current club, Ajax.

His contract at the Dutch club runs until next year, but there has never been a better chance for him to return to the Stadium of Light than now.

Tough season awaits Régis Le Bris and his side

Le Bris and his team will already be looking ahead to next season, though they’re likely to be among the favourites for relegation. given the current trends.

Recruitment will need to be spot on, with Henderson a potential signing and fresh investment expected following promotion.

The Mackems will also struggle to keep their current squad together, with Jobe Bellingham potentially eyeing a move away, already jetting out to Germany for talks.

If key players depart, Sunderland must fill the gaps carefully, and retaining talent will be essential.

Strong recruitment will be key to getting the Stadium of Light to believe they can become an established Premier League side once again.

Whatever happens, the Black Cats’ fans will keep the faith.
