The Stadium of Light has hosted some memorable occasions, but Ballard’s last-second equaliser to send Sunderland to Wembley in front of 46,000 supporters is right up there at the top.

Those of a red and white persuasion still get goosebumps when watching the goal back, but the club certainly went one step too far.

Sunderland’s ‘Til The End slogan was taken quite literally when Ballard scored one second before the full-time whistle, with the time of the goal printed on the front of a shirt for supporters to buy ahead of their trip to Wembley.

However, the post didn’t last long, with supporters eager to point out that there is still a huge game to be played for the moment to have any real meaning. An embarrassing moment for all involved.

Sunderland must remain focused ahead of Sheffield United clash

Given the finances and season record, Sunderland are the underdogs for the trip to Wembley, but that doesn’t mean they can’t secure their spot back in the Premier League.

However, it shows just how big of a game lies ahead for the Wearsiders, and it is crucial that Regis le Bris gets his side playing at thei best.

Sunderland have already beaten the Blades once this season, and will be hoping to replicate that success at the weekend in the biggest game in nine years.
