Sunderland dealt crushing Romaine Mundle blow after latest injury development

Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle has been ruled out with a hamstring injury and has yet to feature this season.

The 22-year-old suffered an injury in pre-season and he required surgery, which ruled him out for a number of months.

Mundle’s injury meant he had to leave Sunderland’s training camp in Portugal and he has been unavailable since mid-July.

Romaine Mundle out with likely Grade 4 injury

Regis Le Bris claimed that Mundle would be out of action for the Black Cats until October.

Given that timeline, Dr Rajpal Brar believes that the English winger is ruled out with a Grade 4 full tear muscle injury.

He does not expect Mundle back in first-team training before late September and is of the opinion that he won’t be back to 100 per cent until December.

Dr Brar told Mackem News: “This is likely a Grade 4 full tear muscle injury.

If the timeline holds, I’d expect him back in team training in late September, early October.

It will take him a few weeks after to get back to 100 per cent and I do not expect that to be before December.

Sunderland will miss Romaine Mundle’s impact

Mundle’s injury is a significant setback for Sunderland, given his pivotal role in their successful Championship campaign last season.

The Englishman was instrumental in securing promotion, contributing five goals and two assists in 22 league appearances despite recurring hamstring issues.

His pace, flair and ability to operate on either flank provided Sunderland with attacking dynamism and versatility, making him a worthy successor to Jack Clarke.

Mundle’s standout performances highlighted his importance to Le Bris’ system.

His hamstring surgery, ruling him out for the next few weeks, leaves a gap in Sunderland’s attacking depth, especially with other injuries mounting.

With a recovery timeline extending to mid-October, Sunderland must rely on new signings to fill the void, potentially disrupting their early-season momentum.
