Sunderland confirm Wear-Tyne Derby update as statement released ahead of Newcastle clash

Sunderland are preparing for their first Premier League derby clash against Newcastle since 2016.

Sunderland and Newcastle are bitter rivals but haven’t had a chance to come head-to-head regularly over the last nine years.

The bitterness is still there as Alan Shearer continues to face ridicule from Sunderland fans after a positive start to the campaign under Regis Le Bris.

A Sunderland defeat against Manchester United may have been frustrating last time out, but it hasn’t taken away from a great start back in the Premier League.

Mackems are now seriously looking forward to their clash against Newcastle United and have learned of a change to the Stadium of Light edition of the derby.

Sunderland release statement ahead of Newcastle United clash

Granit Xhaka has already spoken out on Newcastle in a sentiment that supporters in SR5 have been delighted with.

There is already a clear view in this fresh-faced squad that beating Eddie Howe’s side is of paramount importance to supporters.

The last time the Wear-Tyne derby was played, the Black Cats fell to a 3-0 defeat in the FA Cup back in January 2024.

A Dan Ballard own goal was added to by an Alexander Isak brace, which saw out an easy win against Michael Beale’s side, but things are much different now.

The derby was initially scheduled for 13 December, but has now been moved for live coverage to Sunday 14 December with a 2pm kick-off, as per a Sunderland statement.

The Black Cats’ earlier fixture against Liverpool has also seen a change in kick-off, being moved to the later time of 8:15pm at Anfield.

Sunderland can’t let themselves down vs Newcastle United

Last time against the Magpies, Sunderland rolled out the red carpet and for whatever reason made their fans welcome at the Stadium of Light.

Bizarrely, elements of the away end were covered with Newcastle branding despite the bitter nature of the derby.

The anger surrounding this wasn’t helped by the performance on the pitch as Isak showcased the difference in quality between the sides.

The Mackems are now in a much better place and have every chance of pulling off an excellent win to prove their Premier League credentials.

They won’t repeat the same mistakes and just need to ensure their performance highlights what is great about Sunderland right now.
