View: Sunderland can’t afford to sanction Trey Ogunsuyi sale amid Liverpool news
Trey Ogunsuyi has been the focus of interest from Liverpool but Sunderland cannot afford to let their prized talent leave.
Sunderland Echo reported in November that Liverpool wanted to sign Ogunsuyi after his impressive performances at youth level.
The Belgian forward has shown bags of potential this season and could break into the first team sooner rather than later.
However, Daily Mail have claimed (16 December) Liverpool are “poised to raid” Sunderland for the teen in January and the Black Cats must hold strong.
Ogunsuyi has the potential to be the striker that the Mackems have been missing ever since the departure of Ross Stewart to Southampton and his departure would be severely disappointing.
Sunderland need to retain their top talents
While much of the focus in the coming weeks will be on the future of Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham, the importance of keeping their up-and-coming players cannot be overlooked.
Ogunsuyi fits that bill and his performances at youth level have cranked the excitement levels up on Wearside and Liverpool’s interest is largely unsurprising.
He isn’t the only striker coming through the Academy of Light with serious potential, with Marcus Neill another to have entered the spotlight on Wearside.

The 16-year-old, ironically arriving from Liverpool in the summer, was on the scoresheet again as Sunderland Under-21 secured a 2-1 victory over Arsenal on 16 December.
The Black Cats need to retain their talent and the youth-orientated approach should provide encouragement for those to remain with the clubs despite interest elsewhere.
In other Sunderland news, Amad Diallo made a “beautiful” admission on his loan spell at the club.
