Sunderland ‘can seal instant defensive upgrade’ after £1.2m exit news

Sunderland will make no secret that they want to bolster their defence ahead of the Premier League campaign.

After the arrival of Enzo Le Fee, Sunderland have already started their summer transfer business, though the best is yet to come.

The Black Cats are expected to break their transfer record once more at the Stadium of Light, as they look to build a side capable of surviving in the top flight.

While big-money signings usually do the trick, the Wearsiders will also be on the lookout for any potential bargain deals, and after the latest exit news from the Championship, they face an absolute no-brainer this summer window.

Millwall defender Tanganga available for just £1.2m this summer

With Chris Mepham returning to Bournemouth as it stands, and concerns over several other defensive stars, the Black Cats will be aware that they need reinforcements in that area of the pitch.

It’s hard to rule out a return for Mepham, though with Bournemouth holding a one-year extension clause in his contract, it is highly anticipated that the Cherries will trigger that, to enable themselves to get a fee for his sale.

If Sunderland do pursue that deal, very few will complain, but the latest news from Millwall will surely put the Wearsiders on high alert.

Via Richard Cawley on X (4 June), Japhet Tanganga could leave this summer for as little as £1.2million, with it claimed that he has a release clause at that value.

The added catch? It is said that only Premier League clubs can trigger it, providing Sunderland with an easy, yet cheap defensive upgrade that comes with very little risk.

Championship plays host to some special footballing talent

Sunderland will be keen to showcase their ambition this summer with big-name signings from abroad, though they can’t afford to overlook the place they just arrived from.

The Championship has some excellent talent that is often snubbed by Premier League sides, and the Black Cats need to look to break that trend this summer.

This summer is huge, and the Wearsiders need to do whatever it takes to survive in the top flight.
