Sunderland can end woeful 16-year record in Premier League clash vs Burnley

Sunderland will be aiming to build on the impressive start that they made on their Premier League return at the weekend.

Sunderland demolished West Ham with a 3-0 victory, as they notched their first points in the top flight following an eight-year exile.

It was the perfect opening day for the returning Wearsiders, who will know that a strong start could potentially hold the key to their fortunes across the rest of the Premier League campaign.

A trip to Burnley is the next assignment for the Black Cats, as they aim to extend their 100 per cent record in 2025/26 against their fellow newly-promoted side.

Sunderland can break 16-year curse vs Burnley

Sunderland received plenty of praise for their performance in their return to Premier League action, but it is important that they don’t rest on their laurels after such an impressive opening day.

It was an eye-catching display from the Mackems, who were energetic, ruthless in front of goal, and looked every bit a side who belonged in the top flight.

However, with that victory now firmly in the past, they will be desperate to claim another three points when they travel to Turf Moor on Saturday.

The Stadium of Light will undoubtedly play a key role in their fight against the drop, but any points picked up away from home will also be a welcome bonus.

Le Bris’ men will travel to Lancashire at the weekend knowing that another win would break a woeful 16-year record for the club.

Sunderland have not won any of their last 24 Premier League away matches in either August or September, in a run which stretches back to a 1-0 victory over Bolton in 2009, according to BBC Sport.

Black Cats hope to continue strong record against Burnley

Sunderland were promoted alongside Burnley, and they will be desperate to continue their strong recent record against their likely relegation rivals.

Le Bris’ charges were one of just five sides that the Clarets didn’t beat in either encounter last season on their way to their final tally of 100 points.

The Black Cats triumphed 1-0 at home last August, before a 0-0 draw away from home in January ensured they remained one of the few teams to go unbeaten against Scott Parker’s impressive unit.

That record could have been made even sweeter had Wilson Isidor not missed two stoppage-time penalties in the second of those two encounters.

This time around, the pair will do battle in the Premier League, and it is a crucial ‘six pointer’ that could already be pivotal in their seasons.
