Sunderland can break 60-year curse with win vs Aston Villa

Sunderland have several added incentives to secure a win against Aston Villa this weekend.

Aston Villa travel to face Sunderland on Sunday afternoon, with hopes of picking up their first win of the Premier League season.

It has been a tricky period for Unai Emery’s side, with Aston Villa failing to score in the league since Sunderland got Chris Wilder sacked at Sheffield United.

Villa are favourites to beat Sunderland, but if the Black Cats can secure another shock result, they will achieve something for the first time since 1965.

Regis Le Bris has led his side to two home wins this season

Off the back of Sunderland’s 2-1 win against Brentford last time out on Wearside, the Black Cats have a 100 per cent win record at the Stadium of Light this season, in Premier League encounters.

If they can add to that with a win against the Villans on Sunday, it will see them win their first three home league games for the first time since 1965.

Emery’s side, despite such a poor start to the campaign, still possesses a remarkable amount of quality in the squad, showcasing that it will be yet another tough, tough game to come away with a result from.

The last newly-promoted side to achieve that feat was Burnley back in 2009.

Regis Le Bris has a series of selection dilemmas to contend with ahead of the clash, but certainly has the quality in his ranks to see his side pick up another crucial win.

Sunderland must address creativity concerns vs Aston Villa

Despite the fact that Sunderland have picked up seven points from just four games, there have still been some concerns.

The main one revolves around Sunderland’s struggles when it comes to creating chances, with the lowest xG from open play in the Premier League.

Set pieces and moments of quality have carried them through so far, though, against an Emery side, they will need to be far more efficient with the ball.

With the Bradley Lowery Foundation set to play a huge part in Sunday’s game, it promises to be another momentous occasion for Sunderland.
