Sunderland break 19-year Premier League record with what happened vs West Ham

Sunderland have been breaking records all summer since their promotion to the Premier League.

Off the back of Sunderland’s 3-0 demolition of West Ham, optimism levels are off the charts on Wearside.

Sunderland are also said to be closing in on two new signings to add to a squad that has already showcased its ability to compete in the top flight.

Regis Le Bris’ side looks set to make Premier League history with the amount of money spent by a newly promoted club, and have already broken a 19-year record on the pitch.

Three Premier League debutants score for Sunderland vs West Ham

Only two of the 11 starting players on Saturday had made an appearance in the Premier League before now.

Those two being Granit Xhaka and Simon Adingra, who both impressed on their first competitive outing in the famous red and white.

However, the three who got on the scoresheet made history for Sunderland, who became the first club since 2006 to have three debutants score in the same Premier League game.

Reading were the last team to achieve it, with Dave Kitson, Steve Sidwell and Leroy Lita netting in a victory over Middlesbrough 19 years ago, as per BBC Sport.

Aside from making history in that regard, Sunderland will take plenty away from their opening day victory against the Hammers, with a huge clash against Burnley up next.

Sunderland’s win vs West Ham shows how big a role the promotion winning team has

All three goal scorers were regulars for Sunderland last season, despite the fact that they have spent over £130million on new talent this summer.

While many questioned who would be able to make the step up, those who featured on Saturday passed the test with flying colours.

With several players due back from injury, and a handful of more new arrivals expected at Sunderland, this season is already shaping up to be something special.
