Sunderland: Alan Shearer right to label Luke O’Nien ‘stupid’, but squad depth the bigger issue

Luke O’Nien endured a difficult afternoon at St James’ Park, despite Sunderland’s dramatic late win against rivals Newcastle.

Having risen through the divisions with the Black Cats, the versatile defender and midfielder has made seven appearances in the Premier League before he captained the club in Sunday’s derby at St James’ Park.

Just 10 minutes into the clash, O’Nien provided Newcastle with a huge chance to take the lead, which Anthony Gordon took, following some haphazard build-up play from the centre-back and young goalkeeper Melker Ellborg.

It was a moment described as “stupid” by Alan Shearer on Premier League Productions – and rightly so, with Sunderland their own worst victims.

The Stadium of Light outfit would bounce back against their neighbours, though, with Chemsdine Talbi’s second-half equaliser and Brian Brobbey’s late winner, but they could have done without the early danger.

Sunderland are well-placed to secure their survival, though O’Nien’s record in the top flight has highlighted serious depth issues that need to be addressed over the summer.

O’Nien’s history with the club cannot be ignored, having shone throughout the divisions at the Stadium of Light.

However, the Premier League has looked a step too far since his introduction to the team.

While his side would bounce back in the second period, the worry was still there with the defender.

Having misplaced all three long balls, failing to win a tackle and just two duels, alongside his early error, it was not the easiest afternoon for the skipper – as outlined by his Sofascore graphic below.

O’Nien joined the club in 2018 following Sunderland’s relegation to the Championship, and has been a fantastic servant since.

However, the simple fact of the matter is that he has looked out of his depth when called upon in the top flight.

Sunderland have big squad depth issues

Regis Le Bris’ side adapted to Premier League life seamlessly following their ascent last May.

Though, this was largely down to their fantastic recruitment, with a great mixture of youth and experience arriving last summer.

Beyond that, the Black Cats have suffered when it comes to their squad depth.

Summer arrival Nordi Mukiele remains absent, alongside Dan Ballard – leaving big defensive holes to fill, while Reinildo and Dennis Cirkin have also faced periods on the sidelines recently.

O’Nien is a huge character, and someone who has worked incredibly hard to get to the top-flight, however he simply is not at the level that Sunderland are aiming to reach this term.

Le Bris’ side will be looking to further establish themselves in the Premier League next season, and squad depth will be the first issue to address as they look to do exactly that.
