Sunderland agree record-breaking Melker Ellborg signing, he’s in England now for medical
Melker Ellborg looks set to become Sunderland’s second signing of the winter transfer window.
The Black Cats have already completed the signing of Jocelin Ta Bi, pipping Scottish Premiership side Celtic to his signature.
Regis Le Bris is keen to reinforce his squad at the Stadium of Light, with safety looking like a foregone conclusion at this point.
Ellborg is close to a move to the Mackems after a new update was shared on his future.

What record-breaking deal have Sunderland agreed?
Sunderland have agreed a deal to sign the Malmo FF goalkeeper, according to SportExpressen journalist Anel Advic.
He claimed on 31 January that the North East outfit have agreed a £3.4million deal to sign the 22-year-old, who has made five Europa League appearances this season so far.
Advic stated that the agreement would set the record for the most expensive goalkeeper sale in Allsvenskan history, and the player is in England for a medical.
Why Sunderland signing Ellborg makes sense
Robin Roefs is the Black Cats’ undisputed starting goalkeeper at the moment, starring since moving to the English top-flight.
He may well attract interest from bigger clubs in the summer, and the club may struggle to keep him around, depending on the types of offers that come in.
Therefore, it makes sense to bring in a talented goalkeeper, who can be a potential replacement in the future.
| Stat | Roefs (Premier League) |
| Appearances | 23 |
| Clean sheets | 7 |
| Goals conceded | 26 |
| Save percentage | 74.5% |
Anthony Patterson’s future looks set to be away from Wearside, as he looks to have lost Le Bris’ trust, and if he does depart, then the Mackems need a reliable back-up.
Ellborg looks like he can be that, at the very least, although he may not be willing to settle for a place on the bench, as he already has European experience under his belt.
It is another example of solid futureproofing from the club, and it could pay off in the future, no matter what happens with Roefs.
If the Dutchman departs, then the Wearsiders have a replacement already in their squad, if he stays, they have a brilliant option to step up in the case of injury.
The Swedish star looks like a top prospect, and it would be brilliant business if he comes through the door before the 2 February deadline strikes.
