Sunderland ace Robin Roefs sends Jenson Seelt message as transfer confirmed

Sunderland targeted the Dutch league this summer amid their clear policy to sign players from abroad.

Robin Roefs arrived at the Stadium of Light from NEC Nijmegen and has since become Regis Le Bris’ number one.

On deadline day, there were more additions from the Eredivisie, with Bertrand Traore and Brian Brobbey joining Sunderland.

Now, Roefs has sent a message to his compatriot Jenson Seelt after he completed a move away from the North East.

Robin Roefs reacts as Jenson Seelt shares Wolfsburg images

Seelt started the season at centre-back for Sunderland despite playing 21 minutes of Championship football last season.

While the 22-year-old has shown promise, his appearance was more due to the injury crisis in the hub of defence.

Luke O’Nien and Aji Alese were both sidelined, while Omar Alderete was not quite ready for a starting place.

Seelt went off injured in the second half against West Ham, but was then thrust into action against Burnley after Dan Ballard was withdrawn through an injury of his own.

Sunderland faced a dilemma whether to keep the centre-back past the deadline, but he eventually completed a season-long loan move to Wolfsburg.

The Dutchman shared his first images as a Wolfsburg player on Instagram on 4 September, and Roefs reacted with a shocked emoji.

Sunderland take calculated gamble in letting Jenson Seelt leave

While a loan to the Bundesliga must be viewed as a positive for the centre-back, there is an element of risk.

The Wearsiders have endured rotten luck with injuries at the back, and there will surely be more obstacles along the way.

Ballard has consistently endured setbacks during his time in the North East and defines the term injury-prone.

Alese is another player who has missed a substantial number of games, while O’Nien has suffered several dislocated shoulders.

Of course, Le Bris now has Nordi Mukiele and Alderete to call upon, and they will likely forge a partnership for the foreseeable future.

However, if either of them picks up an injury, then the Black Cats may regret letting Seelt leave.
