Leeds United players slammed by Jeff Stelling after what they did v Sunderland
Sports broadcaster Jeff Stelling expressed his dismay towards the Leeds United players on social media following their reaction to Sunderland’s last-minute equaliser on Friday (4 October) night.
The highly respected presenter quickly expressed his concerns on social media after many of the Leeds squad were seen failing to console Illan Meslier after his goalkeeping howler awarded Sunderland a 97th-minute equaliser in their most recent fixture.
In his post on X, Stelling reacted to what he saw at the Stadium of Light at the end of the dramatic 2-2 draw.
He said: “Would have been nice to see some Leeds players console Meslier a little more – notably Junior Firpo !! A terrible, terrible mistake but nobody feeling worse than the keeper.”
After the final whistle, Meslier was pictured laughing and smiling, most noticeably with Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris to which Stelling responded: “What else is he meant to do? Cry ?”
Illan Meslier gifts Sunderland a point
All in all, a point a piece was certainly a fair outcome in the encounter with both sides demonstrating their credentials to be at the top end of the table. However, Meslier will rightfully take the blame for Leeds failing to pick up all three points.
What should have been a routine save turned into a disaster when Alan Browne’s deflected cross seemed to bounce past the Frenchman from a distance, leaving many of his teammates angry and devastated.
Sunderland will take plenty of positives from the draw, perhaps most importantly their unbeaten home run continuing against a side worth 15-times more than their XI was assembled for.
With Le Bris’ side entering the international break at the top of the Championship, the head coach will be aiming to iron out any errors that occurred against Leeds when they travel to face Hull City upon the return of club action.
In other Sunderland news, Alan Browne sent a message to Meslier after the 2-2 draw.
