Stadium of Light fan guide: How to get to Sunderland AFC by train, bus and car
The Stadium of Light is one of the biggest footballing grounds in England.
Sunderland have made the Stadium of Light a fortress again recently, having not too long ago gone a full calendar year without a win on home soil.
With Wise Men Say blaring from the home support, who are well-known to be among the best fans in England, Sunderland have their own secret weapon.
The Stadium of Light has a capacity of over 48,000, meaning thousands of supporters travel to Wearside for each and every home game.
With that in mind, Mackem News details the best ways to travel to Sunderland’s ground, whether that be by car or via public transport.

Travelling to the Stadium of Light by car?
Those travelling North to Sunderland will most likely do so via the A1(M) and A19 highways.
Five miles on from Junction 62, the most common route is via the A690 before turning off at the Hylton Grange Interchange exit to follow Wessington Way.
From there, the road leads directly to the home of Sunderland AFC.
The Stadium of Light is situated in Monkwearmouth, which is very close to Sunderland’s City Centre, which is just a one-mile walk away.
Sunderland recently brought in charges for parking at the Stadium of Light unless you have a valid permit, though there are several accessible car parks nearby.
Whether you are an away supporter or a red and white fan, the St Mary’s Car Park is located next to the bridge that leads you directly to the ground.
As for the cost from Monday to Saturday, it is £1.60 per hour between the hours of 8am and 6pm, and £1.00 per hour otherwise, with a £3 flat rate for those using the car park after 8am on a Sunday.

Utilising public transport to get to the Stadium of Light
Supporters also have various means of public transport that they take advantage of, ranging from buses, park and ride or trains.
St Peter’s Metro Station is just a 10-minute walk away from the stadium, with trains running approximately every 12 minutes.
Alternatively, the 13, 3, 9 or 24 bus will also get you within walking distance.
Sunderland also operate a park and ride service which is free of charge on matchdays, which is accessible via various points across Wessington Way.
