Southampton fans ‘praying’ for Sunderland after Caleta-Car news

Southampton fans are not overly optimistic about Sunderland’s survival chances after the latest transfer news.

Sunderland will not need anyone to tell them this, but they face a remarkably difficult task of staying in the Premier League following their promotion from the Championship.

If survival is to be achieved, Sunderland need to recruit well, and Regis Le Bris will be hoping that the Black Cats can seal several signings before their season gets underway with a clash against West Ham in August.

However, transfer news to have emerged from France has sparked major surprise at Southampton, and it doesn’t bode well for the Wearsiders.

Sunderland want to sign Duje Ćaleta-Car

Following links to Kyiv striker Vadyslav Vanat, it is clear that the Black Cats are intent on bolstering their forward line, to have a chance of competing in the top flight.

However, with a deal for Chris Mepham seemingly moving away from reality, adding to their defensive ranks will be just as important, with reports from France suggesting they have expressed an interest in signing Lyon’s Duje Ćaleta-Car.

The Croatian international spent time on loan at Southampton in the Premier League, and their reviews on his ability serve as a stark warning to Sunderland if they are to pursue a move.

Sunderland may need to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements

As crucial as it will be for Sunderland to recruit players with Premier League experience, signing those who have failed to impress in the top flight may not be the smartest move for a side chasing survival.

Of course, there is every chance that someone like Caleta-Car could thrive on Wearside, but it would be a huge risk, and there is very little room for risk-taking this season.

Sunderland will be expected to be busy this summer, and with over two months of the transfer window remaining, there is still plenty of time to conclude incoming deals.
