Sky Sports share Sunderland exit decision on Romaine Mundle after Rangers enquiry

Romaine Mundle has been linked with a January exit from Sunderland.

After Sunderland spent more than £160million on transfers last summer, Regis Le Bris’ side are yet to bring in any January recruits.

Sunderland academy star Dan Neil is in talks over an emotional departure from the Stadium of Light and other outgoings could be on the cards this month.

Mundle has been credited with interest from Rangers but he played every minute of Sunderland’s third-round FA Cup win over Everton last weekend.

However, that was his first start of the season and speculation is ramping up over his future.

Sunderland make January Mundle decision

Off the back of his struggles with a hamstring injury and limited minutes, Mundle has played for Sunderland’s Under-21s this season.

That was, however, merely to boost his fitness but, now that he is available again, the 22-year-old is on the fringes of Le Bris’ side.

Although the winger, whose contract runs until 2028, has made just nine appearances this season, Sunderland want him to stay, according to Sky Sports.

Reporter Keith Downie claims that while midfielder Neil is “likely to go” either in January or when his contract expires this summer, Mundle will be retained despite interest from Rangers and Feyenoord.

He said, “Romaine Mundle is a player attracting interest. Rangers enquired over a loan move for him last week, so to have Feyenoord but Sunderland have made the decision that Mundle will be staying on Wearside as they look to have plenty of winger options for the second part of the season.”

Sunderland face January transfer decisions

Sunderland were one of the favourites to go straight back down to the Championship but instead have been a breath of fresh air in the Premier League.

They are a whopping 16 points from safety and have plenty to play for this season. But their sharp rise and hefty summer spend mean some players may be surplus to requirements.

What does this mean for fringe players such as Luke O’Nien, Anthony Patterson, Dennis Cirkin, and more? This is certainly a topic that has crossed Le Bris’ mind.

He said this month: “The conversation is open for every player who lacks minutes. That’s always the case. The most important thing is the club project – this is the first idea. Then, after that, it depends on the situation.

If we think that over the second half of the season, the player won’t play a lot, then it means you can perhaps find a solution.

But you have to find another club with a good project as well. I still say that it is important to stay open, to avoid misunderstandings. If it is clear for everyone, then after that you can move forward.
