Simon Adingra wanted by Champions League club as Sunderland face unwanted dilemma

Simon Adingra has emerged as a January transfer target for a European club.

The January transfer window opens in less than 24 hours, with the Black Cats expected to be heavily involved in the business.

Sunderland look set to axe several players from their squad, while also looking to bring in one or two new players to complement the quality that Regis Le Bris already has at his disposal.

However, in the midst of that expected business, there will be some unexpected interest in some of those who have a key role to play, and Adingra seems to be one of them.

Juventus identify Adingra as January target

Adingra scored his first Sunderland goal in their 1-1 draw with Leeds United, and had it not been for Brian Brobbey hitting the woodwork from close range, he would also have had his first assist.

With that said, the Ivorian showcased his worth to the Black Cats in the absence of Chemsdine Talbi and Bertrand Traore, with hopes that he will now be able to kick on and use that as momentum.

However, that may be halted in January with Gazzetta reporting that the former Brighton ace has emerged as a target for Juventus.

It’s claimed that the Italian giants are lining up three new players ahead of the transfer window, with attacking reinforcements a clear priority.

However, for Sunderland, had the interest emerged a week ago, it may have been a different story, but given Adingra‘s performance against Leeds, and the likelihood of him only getting better, it’s hard to see them having any interest in moving him on.

Sunderland may have to sell before they can buy

From a PSR perspective, that isnt entirely accurate – it’s believed that the Black Cats have plenty of headroom in that regard.

However, from a squad point of view, it may be the case.

Sunderland already have an unhealthy amount of players getting no action in the Premier League, with the likes of Leo Hjelde, Ian Poveda, Abdoullah Ba and several others yet to make a single appearance, many of whom are yet to make it into a matchday squad.

The Wearsiders simply have to find a way to move some of them on to prevent the squad from becoming too bloated.

With that said, the size of the squad is unlikely to deter them from any incoming business, with European football still achievable.
