Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland result predicted by supercomputer

Sunderland are back in Championship action this Friday with an away encounter against Sheffield Wednesday.

Off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Hull City, Sunderland’s automatic promotion chances are looking rather slim given the eight-point gap to second-placed Sheffield United.

Leeds United, having recently secured a huge three points against Sunderland, look all but set for a Premier League return.

It looks as though it will be playoffs or bust for the Black Cats who have been dealt a series of injury blows ahead of the final run-in.

Supercomputer forecasts more misery for Sunderland

Regis Le Bris’ side will be fully aware of the challenges a trip to Hillsborough can pose and if they are to come away victorious, the performance will need to be greatly improved.

Despite what has been an excellent campaign as a whole, there has been a miserable cloud cast over Wearside as of late, and according to the latest predictions, it’s only going to get bigger.

Via Opta Analyst, Sheffield Wednesday are the favourites for the clash, with a 37.2 per cent chance of winning, only marginally more than the 36.4 per cent chance awarded to the Mackems.

Of course, that leaves a 26.3 per cent chance of a draw, which has been an all too familiar feeling on Wearside this season.

Sunderland have a healthy gap on those below them

The Black Cats have a healthy advantage over the teams below them, but given the relentless nature of the Championship, that can change in an instant.

Simply put, the Wearsiders need to get back into form immediately to ensure that they have the strongest end to the campaign possible.

Sunderland need to get promoted this season

Before the current campaign, very few will have anticipated the Black Cats being where they are.

While unlikely, there is still a chance of a top-two finish heading into March, which is a showcase of how much improvement there has been since last season.

However, that will all count for nothing if promotion isn’t achieved and it could have a drastic effect going forward.

With several players being courted by top European clubs, Sunderland will likely lose some of them if they fail to return to the Premier League, making the new season an even bigger task.
