Salis Abdul Samed ‘could be surprise catalyst’ behind Sunderland win v Leeds United
Salis Abdul Samed has had a mixed start to life at Sunderland, but he could have a crucial role to play in the clash with Leeds United.
Sunderland are still in the promotion picture off the back of their 2-0 win against Luton Town, but Monday night’s encounter with Leeds could be a deciding fixture.
Heading into the game, Sunderland are five points outside of the top two and seven behind table-topping Leeds with the latter stage of the season now approaching.
A win for the Wearsiders would open the promotion race up completely, while a defeat would all but end their hopes of winning the league, providing a huge dent to their chances of achieving automatic promotion.
However, in order to taste victory at Elland Road, Samed could hold the key.
Samed has big part to play for Sunderland v Leeds United
Since arriving on Wearside, Samed has been limited to just two starts and five appearances altogether, with injuries playing a part.
The Black Cats haven’t won a game when the midfielder has started but that could change if he is to be named in the starting 11 against Leeds, given the role that he plays.
Samed operates as an out-and-out defensive midfielder, which in games where the Mackems are expected to be on the front foot, doesn’t exactly work. As showcased when Sunderland were held to a 2-2 draw with Plymouth.
However, with Leeds likely to dominate possession and push Sunderland back, Samed could be the key to reducing the pressure on the backline and providing the calming influence that can often be crucial in these kinds of encounters.

All eyes on Elland Road on Monday
Monday’s clash has the potential to be the biggest fixture of the season for both outfits, with Sunderland looking to bridge the gap and Leeds looking to extend it.
Both sides have shown their qualities throughout the season and are certainly deserving of their place in the league table.
It promises to be an entertaining spectacle that could paint a very clear picture of the promotion race in what is very much a six-pointer.
