Sadiki and Diarra sign for Sunderland – What does it mean for Jordan Henderson?

Jordan Henderson has been the headline rumour at Sunderland this summer, with his Ajax future in serious doubt already.

After the Black Cats gained promotion to the Premier League, the Henderson to Sunderland rumours went into fifth gear after his presence at Wembley.

However, the Wearsiders have now completed deals for a couple of central midfielders, which could impact a move.

With Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra through the Sunderland door, Mackem News analyses what it means for a possible return for Henderson.

Diarra and Sadiki signings to end Henderson pursuit?

The midfielder has been linked with Nottingham Forest and Marseille, but Ian Darke exclusively told Mackem News that Sunderland is a more likely destination for Henderson.

Henderson is free to leave the Dutch capital this summer as new manager Johnny Heitinga does not have him in his plans.

Furthermore, the Eredivisie club are willing to let the 35-year-old leave on a free transfer despite him having a year left on his current contract.

The England international made 28 appearances for the Dutch giants last season and is now expected to leave.

However, Sunderland is looking less and less likely after the arrivals of Diarra and Sadiki, both central midfielders.

The pair have arrived on Wearside for a combined fee that could reach £47.5million, including add-ons.

Diarra is a box-to-box midfielder, while Sadiki can play in a central role or as a right-back, demonstrating his versatility.

Now, Regis Le Bris has a wealth of options in the middle, and it appears there may not be room for Henderson.

Sunderland to move players on to fit in Henderson?

With a host of options in the middle, it feels like the Black Cats will need to move players on to fit in their former academy man.

Several players are expected to leave the Stadium of Light this summer, which will free up some space.

Pierre Ekwah and Nectarios Triantis will likely move on permanently, while Milan Aleksic is set for a loan switch.

Elsewhere, Jay Matete will surely move on for good after several loans, and Alan Browne could also be shifted.

Although many are calling for the homecoming of Henderson now, Sunderland must wave goodbye to players before sealing his return.
