Romaine Mundle reacts as permanent Sunderland exit made official on deadline day
Sunderland have sanctioned an exit for one of their long-serving players.
Sunderland looked set for a lacklustre deadline day, but things have started to take shape in the final hours of the window.
The Black Cats are closing in on a move to sign Nilson Angulo on a permanent deal for Anderlecht, with the Ecuadorian undergoing a medical ahead of a move to Wearside.
His move is said to be dependent on the future of Simon Adingra, who is undergoing a medical in London ahead of a move to AS Monaco on a season-long loan.
However, elsewhere, the Black Cats have sanctioned a permanent exit for another of their wingers, as announced via an Instagram post.
Birmingham complete Patrick Roberts swoop
Patrick Roberts is labelled a hero on Wearside, having played a key role in the Black Cats’ rise from League One over the last five years.
It was his assist that saw Jack Clarke score the winning goal against Sheffield Wednesday in the play-off semi-final in League One, and it was also his assist that saw Eliezer Mayenda score the equaliser against their Sheffield counterparts in the Championship play-off final.
However, Roberts quickly lost his place at the Stadium of Light and was moved on to Birmingham on loan.
Now, the Championship club have turned that deal into a permanent transfer, as announced via their official Instagram post.
Romaine Mundle, who has been linked with an exit earlier in the window, liked the post, having played alongside Roberts in the Championship last season.
Patrick Roberts exit showcases harsh reality of Premier League football.
Sunderland’s promotion-winning squad has been decimated over the last six months, with Anthony Patterson, Dan Neil, Jobe Bellingham, and now Roberts having all secured moves away.
The Black Cats have been ruthless in their transfer approach since the summer, and while there will be some emotion behind that, it is the reality of the task that faces newly-promoted sides.
There is no room for sentiment when trying to avoid relegation, and by showcasing their understanding of that, Sunderland are on course to achieve that and beyond.
With that said, those players who contributed to the success in the Championship will never be forgotten on Wearside and will receive the best wishes from red and white supporters.
