Sunderland away kit channels classic 90s Style
A leaked image that has surfaced on X shows off the classic design from the 90s.
Roker Report shared an image that showed someone on the beach wearing the blue jersey featuring the new W88 gambling logo.
It’s assumed that the image is from a photoshoot ahead of the official launch.
In the 1990’s Sunderland wore the retro shirt in the seasons 1988-1991.
During the 1989-90 season, Sunderland finished sixth in the Second Division and secured promotion to the top flight via the play-offs.
This season, the Wearsiders went up with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United at Wembley.
To earn a return to the Premier League, they came back from 1-0 down, and youngster Tom Watson scored the winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time at the end of the game.
Classic Look, Controversial Sponsor
The new retro-syled shirt has sparked debate on social media among the fans after it’s gambling branding.
In the 2024/25 Premier League season, 11 of the 20 clubs had a gambling sponsor as their front-of-shirt-sponsor.
A combined price of £101.4 million is the outcome of teams having a gambling sponsor as their main sponsor last season.
According to Gamble Aware, 66 per cent of football fans want gambling sponsors as a whole to be banned from being a sponsor on the front of a football shirt. 73 per cent of football fans are concerned with the amount of gambling advertising.
