‘Rigg to follow in Bellingham’s footsteps’ after Sunderland transfer update

Sunderland are braced for interest in a number of their key players this summer, and Chris Rigg is the latest name to be linked with an exit.

Jobe Bellingham recently departed for Borussia Dortmund, leaving a gap in Sunderland’s midfield, and the Black Cats could now be dealt another blow.

Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League didn’t stop Bellingham heading to Germany, with the midfielder recently netting in the FIFA Club World Cup ahead of playing in the UEFA Champions League.

And Rigg could now follow in his former teammate’s footsteps by heading overseas this summer.

Lazio interested in Rigg

Serie A giants Lazio are the latest club to register their interest in Rigg, and could now attempt to sign the 18-year-old after a standout season in the Championship.

As reported by The Laziali (22 June), Lazio are keeping a close eye on Rigg, but are well aware that signing the teenager could be difficult given the competition they will face for his signature.

Rigg has two years left on his contract at the Stadium of Light, and if he does not extend, then his value may never be as high as it is now.

The midfielder has established himself as one of the brightest young talents in the country, but after watching Bellingham leave, he could too be tempted by a move abroad to further his development

Rigg could follow Bellingham abroad

If Rigg stays at Sunderland, he will have a regular starting place in the Premier League, something which he will not have if he joins another English side further up the table.

Should Rigg push for a move, a transfer abroad would suit both Sunderland and the midfielder. Like Bellingham, he can move to a side competing in Europe, but as someone who would still feature regularly.

Moving away from England could help him develop without the additional pressure English players face in the Premier League, and this may be the best long-term decision for his development.

Sunderland would welcome Rigg electing to stay instead, but they will be aware that a number of their players will be targeted this summer.
