Richard Keys loves Sunderland newspaper headline he’s discovered

Man City’s 3-0 win over Sunderland caught the headlines over the weekend.

Sunderland suffered their first heavy defeat of the season away to Man City on Saturday, with the scoreline suggesting that the Black Cats weren’t at the races

In reality, that was far from the case, with Man City’s quality simply prevailing on this occasion.

Ruben Dias opened the scoring from range, Josko Gvardiol doubled their advantage from a corner, before Phil Foden made sure of all three points with a header after an outrageous assist from Rayan Cherki.

Sunday Mirror’s pun amuses Richard Kye

Usually, after a 3-0 defeat, fans are left debating what went wrong and why, but it has been a very different story for Sunderland.

This was a clash where the better team won, and it really was as simple as that, with Sunderland supporters immediately turning their attention to next weekend’s Tyne-Wear Derby.

However, for Man City, they will take plenty from the win, having been the first side from last season’s top seven to beat the Black Cats so far this season.

Arsenal and Liverpool could only manage a draw, while Chelsea suffered defeat at the Bridge courtesy of a last-minute Chemsidine Talbi winner.

Ultimately, it was an important win for Man City, and that was echoed by the fact that it featured on the front of the Sunday Mirror.

“Big Cats 3-0 Black Cats,” it reads, much to the amusement of Keys, who said on X: “I love a clever headline. Mirror are kings these days.”

These aren’t the games that will define Sunderland’s season

Let’s face it, if Sunderland finish 17th and scrape survival by a point, everyone on Wearside will be delighted.

Their ability to do that will not be determined by their results away to the likes of Man City, but instead by their home form.

Sunderland are yet to lose a game at the Stadium of Light this season, and they will be looking to continue that against Newcastle.

Eddie Howe has already discussed his plans from a Newcastle perspective, with fans now awaiting the first league derby since 2016.
