Richard Keys has lost his mind after what he said about ‘baffling’ Sunderland controversy vs Chelsea
Richard Keys has never been one for the most popular opinions, and his latest remark about Sunderland’s win at Stamford Bridge is no different.
Sunderland’s 2-1 victory away to Chelsea was a momentous occasion for all affiliated with the red and whites, with the Black Cats temporarily moving up to second after the win.
Wilson Isidor levelled the game for Sunderland after Alejandro Garnacho gave the hosts the lead after just four minutes, with Chemsdine Talbi later going on to score a last-gasp winner for the Wearsiders.
However, the nature of the goal has sparked plenty of controversy over the weekend, with Keys joining in the debate.
Should Sunderland’s winning goal have been disallowed?
As a Sunderland fan, the celebrations in the capital certainly took priority on Saturday afternoon, though, for others, it was a different story.
People were starting to take notice of the fact that Lutsharel Geertruida was standing in an offside position when Talbi’s strike found the back of the net, leaving many to think that it should have been disallowed.
Chelsea fans were left raging at the PGMOL for their involvement, while others questioned why VAR didn’t intervene.
However, after a somewhat similar incident occurred in Everton’s defeat to Tottenham, Keys took to X to question why one was allowed to stand and the other wasn’t.
He said: “So Sunderland’s goal at Chelsea was allowed despite Geertruida being in the line of sight of the keeper, but Everton’s is disallowed. Why? Vicario had no chance of getting that. It’s baffling.”
Lutsharel Geertruida was not impacting play vs Chelsea
For someone who has worked in football for longer than many of those reading this have been alive, it is quite remarkable that Keys does not know the laws.
Everton’s disallowed goal saw two offside players directly in contact with Guglielmo Vicario before the ball found the back of the net.
Compare that to the Sunderland goal, where Geertruida was merely standing in an offside position, but not impacting play whatsoever.
To compare the two is ludicrous, with both decisions ultimately being the right one, given the context.
