Regis Le Bris drops Dennis Cirkin injury update after Sunderland loss

Sunderland suffered a 3-0 defeat at Coventry on Saturday afternoon, which majorly dents their ongoing promotion push.

Haji Wright bagged a hat-trick to condemn the Black Cats to their biggest defeat of the season.

The Mackems have now dropped points in each of their last two games, following last Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Preston.

Regis Le Bris’ men still sit fourth in the Championship table, though, with a comfortable 12 point cushion between themselves and seventh place Bristol City.

Le Bris does not know the extent of Cirkin’s injury

Aside from the extent of their defeat to Coventry, one of the more concerning moments of the Mackems’ afternoon arrived in the second half, when left-back Cirkin had to be hooked from the action due to an injury, and was replaced by Jenson Seelt.

Cirkin has been a key man for Sunderland this term

Following his side’s defeat, Sunderland boss Le Bris revealed to the press that he doesn’t yet know how serious Crikin’s injury is.

The defender has been a key feature for the Mackems this term, having appeared in 34 of their 38 Championship fixtures so far.

The international break has come at the right time for Sunderland

The Black Cats previously held aspirations of landing an automatic promotion spot this season, but such a feat is now beyond their capabilities, as they sit nine points behind second-place Burnley, while Sheffield United would head to the top-two with a victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

Following successive wins over Wednesday and Cardiff in recent weeks, the Mackems have now endured two games on the bounce without earning a win.

Sunderland aren’t in action again until 29 March when they take on Millwall, and should take the international break to regroup following their heavy defeat at Coventry.

A place in next season’s Premier League is potentially at stake for a Black Cats side who still appear highly likely to land a play-off spot, but they cannot afford to let their heavy defeat to Frank Lampard’s side spoil their momentum at a crucial point in the campaign.
