Geertruida has made 18 appearances for the Black Cats following his summer arrival – operating across multiple positions in both midfield and defence.

After racking up 10 minutes in Monday’s win against Burnley, his manager was keen to offer insight on the short transfer saga.

“We’ve had many conversations,” Le Bris told the Sunderland Echo.

“I think we were honest and really well connected all the way through. When the deadline was finished and over, he accepted the decision. I think he is ready to play for Sunderland. I don’t have any worries about him being okay from now on.”

Sunderland could offer exciting project to Lutsharel Geertruida

The Black Cats have settled into Premier League life seamlessly and have been one of the most promising promoted outfits in many years.

Sitting eighth in the standings, Sunderland have found themselves in the race for European football, thanks largely to their recruitment last summer.

Geertruida arrived alongside the likes of Granit Xhaka, Nordi Mukiele and Reinildo as players with serious pedigree at the highest level of European football. Xhaka’s experience particularly has played a huge part in Sunderland’s transition to the top flight.

Should Le Bris’ side go on and secure a European spot come May, it would offer the chance to return to continental football for Geertruida, who could be tempted to make a permanent switch to the club over the summer.

Sunderland are a club on the up, and their project would become further enticing should they have a strong end to the campaign.
