Regis Le Bris names attributes he loves about new Sunderland arrival Nilson Angulo
Sunderland are looking for a strong end to the campaign after a fantastic first half of the Premier League season.
The Black Cats find themselves sitting eighth in the standings after a 3-0 win against Burnley at the Stadium of Light on Monday, throwing Regis Le Bris’ side back into the European race.
With the January transfer window closing on Monday, Sunderland’s squad has been finalised for the remaining months of the campaign.
Promising Ecuadorian winger Nilson Angulo joined as Sunderland’s latest arrival on deadline day, and Le Bris has named exactly what it is that he loves about the 22-year-old.
Regis Le Bris expresses delight at Nilson Angulo arrival
Angulo joined the club from Belgian giants Anderlecht in a £17.5m switch, after scoring six times and registering seven assists in the Jupiler Pro League this term.
“I know him because we have worked with the recruitment structure on his profile,” Le Bris told the Sunderland Echo.
“I think he is a strong, powerful, tall winger with strong physical ability. He has this South American style of play as well, with the ability to be creative. He likes the one-v-one situations, he has this character.”
Making the move to Belgium in 2022, Angulo broke into the Anderlecht side last term, racking up 1,162 minutes. This term, he has almost doubled that already – with 1,902.
“After that, he will probably need time to connect with his team-mates and the league, but you never know, sometimes it is really quick, sometimes it takes time. But we are really happy to have him,” added Le Bris.
Nilson Angulo signing shows strength of Sunderland project
A fight for European football would have been the last thing on the minds of Sunderland fans just a year ago, however, the club’s exciting project has seen them settle into the Premier League with relative ease after an eight-year exodus.
Alongside the European experience of Granit Xhaka, Nordi Mukiele, Lutsharel Geertruida and Reinildo, youngsters Noah Sadiki and Chemsdine Talbi have caught the eye – with the latter scoring a sublime goal in the recent 3-0 win against Burnley.
Alongside veteran Thorgan Hazard, Angulo emerged as Anderlecht’s most important player this season. Sunderland’s ability to secure his signature shows just how strong the ongoing project at the club is.
With a strong mixture of experience and youth, Sunderland are not looking to simply stand still in the Premier League, and their recruitment matches this idea.
