This is how Regis Le Bris can achieve the unexpected with Sunderland
Regis Le Bris will be no stranger to the task that awaits him and Sunderland in the Premier League.
With over £130million spent, and still more to come, Sunderland are preparing for their first Premier League campaign since relegation back in 2017.
Le Bris’ side remain the favourites to go straight back down despite their summer business, but they certainly look as though they are going to do all they can to avoid that.
After the Frenchman signed a new deal at the Stadium of Light, he has the backing of the board, and he could be the man to steer the Black Cats away from the bottom three.

Sunderland’s style of play is perfect for Premier League
The Wearsiders finished 24 points behind Leeds and Burnley, but they may actually have the best chance of staying up, and a lot of that comes down to the way they play.
Via Fotmob, Sunderland averaged 49.1 per cent possession in the Championship, which was a number bettered by 11 other teams.
Under Le Bris, the Black Cats often sat deep, absorbed pressure and then hit back on the break to good effect.
Average team possession
- Leeds United – 61.6%
- Burnley – 56.9%
- Sunderland – 49.1%
In the Premier League, it will be no different. Sunderland will see very little of the ball and will have to rely on their off-the-ball fluidity and ability in transition to cause damage to opponents, which is exactly what Le Bris likes to do.
When they did attack, they were efficient, with only Leeds and Middlesbrough recording more touches in the opposition box.
Touches in opposition box
- Leeds United – 1413
- Middlesbrough – 1293
- Sunderland – 1162
If goals are to come, Sunderland need to have bodies in the box, and this is a showcase of their ability to do that.
However, if success is to come, Le Bris needs defensive reinforcements as a matter of urgency.
The Black Cats conceded 49.5 xG last season, compared to Burnley’s 38.4 and Leeds United’s 30.7.

Premier League football is a different beast
With the season starting in just over a week with a home clash against West Ham, Sunderland will get their first real taster of life back in the top flight.
The early fixtures are quite favourable with all things considered, and it will be crucial that the Black Cats pick up as many points early doors as possible.
