Rangers odds slashed to sign Jamie Vardy ahead of Sunderland as Rebekah Vardy speaks out

Sunderland are one of several clubs who have been touted as a possible destination for Jamie Vardy this summer.

The 38-year-old star is leaving Leicester City after a glittering spell of over a decade at the King Power Stadium. Sunderland have emerged as a potential candidate to sign Vardy, alongside the likes of Rangers, while a move to the MLS has also been mooted.

Regis Le Bris and Co. will know they will need plenty of reinforcements at the Stadium of Light if they are to survive in the Premier League, and Vardy would bring invaluable top-flight experience, plus an ability to produce magic in the big moments of games.

Vardy to Rangers odds slashed after Rebekah Vardy comments

A move to Sunderland has perhaps always been an outside shout for Vardy this summer, but now it looks as though the chances of the Mackems securing a deal for the former England international are growing ever slimmer.

The odds of Vardy moving north of the border to join Rangers have been slashed following comments from his wife Rebekah, with the frontman now down at 2/1 to join the Bears, according to Oddschecker (19 June).

Rebekah Vardy has attracted plenty of controversy in recent years following her public spat with Coleen Rooney, and it now looks as though her latest comments potentially point towards her husband moving to Ibrox.

She recently claimed her husband is a better player when she is receiving bad press. She told Vanity Fair in a recent interview that “the more stick he (Vardy) gets from the stands in football, the better he plays.”

Sunderland should turn their attention elsewhere

Vardy is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League across a number of years, but Sunderland may be better served turning their attention elsewhere, given Vardy’s age.

The veteran striker still managed to notch nine goals for a disappointing Foxes side last term, but if Sunderland have ambitions of re-establishing themselves as a top-flight club, they must try and target somebody younger who can also bring an ability to score to goals.

Le Bris’ side still need to build for the future, despite their promotion, and by getting in a younger option in, they can ensure they are primed for an immediate return to the Premier League if they do suffer relegation this time around.

On the other hand, if they opted for Vardy, he would potentially only have one more season left in him at the top level, so would arguably be a much more temporary solution.

When you then throw in his likely wage demands, it may be better for Sunderland to look at alternative options.
