Ramsdale to join Newcastle – Three goalkeepers Sunderland could sign instead
Sunderland are searching for a new goalkeeper, but bitter rivals Newcastle have poached one of their key targets.
Anthony Patterson performed well in the Championship, but the Black Cats are aiming to strengthen the position with a more proven option.
Sunderland were interested in Aaron Ramsdale, but the Southampton goalkeeper is now set to join Newcastle.
Ramsdale reportedly turned down Sunderland in favour of a move to St James’ Park, but Mackem News has now suggested three alternative options for Regis Le Bris this summer.

Shakhtar Donetsk goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk has emerged as a target for Sunderland, and he is arguably a better option than Ramsdale.
Riznyk has impressed for the Ukrainian side, and has experience against top-level opposition in the UEFA Champions League, with starts against Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Arsenal in recent years.
Stat | Riznyk |
Appearances | 78 |
Conceded | 77 |
Clean sheets | 35 |
Like Ramsdale, Riznyk is also 26, but would come without three relegations on his CV, and could provide a lot of leadership between the sticks.

Mads Hermansen
Leicester City were relegated from the Premier League last season, but goalkeeper Mads Hermansen was by far their best player.
Hermansen is of interest to West Ham, but Sunderland still have time to swoop in if they want to hijack any possible move.
The 25-year-old would come with an impressive year in the Premier League under his belt, bringing quick reflexes and excellent shot-stopping skills.

Kamil Grabara
One wildcard option for Le Bris could be Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, who has previously spent time in English football.
Grabara came through the ranks at Liverpool and spent time on loan at several clubs, including Huddersfield Town.
The Poland international excelled at FC Copenhagen before joining Wolfsburg, and the 25-year-old ranks as one of the best in Europe for shot-stopping, as per FBref.
Bringing Grabara back to England could be a surprise masterstroke, with the goalkeeper getting better with each passing season, but it remains to be seen what kind of fee would be needed to sign him.
Sunderland are signing Granit Xhaka from the Bundesliga, and he could be a familiar face for Grabara should he also move from Germany to Wearside.
