Pundit names Sunderland as favourites to sign ‘outstanding’ young striker

Carlton Palmer believes Sunderland could be the favourites to sign Celtic striking ace Daniel Cummings.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke reported on Wednesday (27 November) that Sunderland had watched Cummings, as have several other English clubs.

Palmer has now told Football League World [29 November] that Cummings would be a “good fit” for Sunderland if they were to pursue another striker in January.

He said: “Daniel Cummings has been outstanding for Celtic. He’s been prolific for their B team, which is the fifth-tier in Scotland. Obviously, the way that Sunderland are, they bring in young players. We’ve seen that they give them the opportunities, and then sell them on for big money.

“I think Sunderland would be a good move for him. He wants to go to a club where he is going to play too, so I think the Black Cats could be the favourites to sign him.”

Sunderland must prioritise other areas of the squad

The Black Cats spent several seasons chasing a natural goalscorer before seemingly finding one in Wilson Isidor, who has been a revelation on Wearside so far.

For the first time in what feels like a lifetime, Sunderland aren’t entering a transfer window with a burning desire to sign a striker to score goals. Isidor has taken that role and has been thriving at it so far.

Eliezer Mayenda and Aaron Connolly have both featured here and there with Nazariy Rusyn and Ahmed Abdullahi also coming into the fold. Quite simply, a striker is last on the list for what the Black Cats need in January.

Aside from Isidor, the Mackems have lacked goals from elsewhere with Patrick Roberts having failed to score from open play in 18 months and the next biggest goal threat, Romaine Mundle, seemingly out for the remainder of the year.

A good argument could be made for the wide areas to be an area of priority ahead of the transfer window.

The window will provide an excellent opportunity for the Wearsiders to address any issues in the squad that may have been overlooked in the summer, with hopes it can boost their chances of promotion.
