Tottenham ‘in pursuit of Sunderland teen Watson’ after £2m bid

Tottenham, Everton and Crystal Palace have all shown an interest in Sunderland winger Tommy Watson ahead of Monday night’s deadline, according to Graeme Bailey.

Bailey, via the TBR site [1 February], reported that the trio are keen on a deal for Watson who has just 18 months left on his contract on Wearside.

Having only broken into the first team this season, Watson has impressed and the Black Cats have already had to reject a £2million bid from Brighton [TBR].

Watson is currently sidelined with an injury but the Black Cats will be eager to keep him as they look to continue their push for promotion.

Sunderland need to keep Tommy Watson

Since making his first-team debut, Watson has certainly thrived on Wearside and hasn’t looked out of place when he was asked to step up in the absence of Romaine Mundle who is also sidelined.

His ability to go either side of defenders has seen him prove his worth in a senior environment and those attributes will only grow as he gets more exposure to first-team football.

However, for that to happen, Watson needs to remain on Wearside. While a move to the Premier League may appear as an exciting prospect, game time needs to be a consideration and it is highly unlikely he would receive that at any of the mentioned clubs.

You don’t have to look any further than Jack Clarke who made the move to the Premier League last summer, only to find himself seemingly frozen out at Ipswich Town.

The Wearsiders may face a tough test in their bid to retain Watson, but it is certainly a challenge that they need to be up for.
