Premier League release statement after Sunderland controversy that had Brighton fuming
Dan Ballard’s challenge in the second half against Brighton caused uproar at the Amex.
Sunderland and Brighton played out a goalless draw on Saturday afternoon, despite the Black Cats being the better side for the majority of the clash.
Both sides had a flurry of chances throughout, but a lack of quality in the finishing department prevailed in the game.
However, there was one moment of controversy that left the Brighton bench furious, and Ballard was front and centre of it.

Ballard could have been sent off vs Brighton
In a game that lacked quality attacking-wise, the quality from Sunderland‘s defenders certainly made up for it.
Ballard, in particular, was immense, with the Northern Ireland international winning a remarkable 11 duels and making six clearances according to FotMob.
However, the 26-year-old was also involved in a moment of controversy in the second half when he committed to a challenge on Charalampos Kostoulas.
A foul was given, and a yellow card was brandished, though many of a Brighton persuasion wanted Ballard to receive his marching orders, with the Premier League forced to release a statement to explain why that never came.
Via the Premier League Match Centre account, the statement reads: “The referee’s call of a yellow card to Ballard for a reckless challenge was checked and confirmed by VAR, with the contact deemed to be glancing.“
Replays showed that a red would have been harsh, though they have certainly been given for similar challenges already this season.
Brighton draw shows Sunderland frailties
The Black Cats were more than deserving of their point, though whether they did enough to warrant a win is certainly up for debate.
Sunderland had six shots on target against the Seagulls, but failed to really trouble Bart Verbruggen, showcasing their struggles in front of goal.
While several teams are still to play this weekend, only three teams have scored fewer goals than the Wearsiders so far this season.
Improving on that in January will be a necessity for Sunderland if they are to keep pushing up the Premier League table.
