Premier League release new statement on Sunderland incident vs Burnley at Turf Moor

Sunderland’s second Premier League game of the season against Burnley saw them come crashing back down to earth with a bang.

The Mackems started well and should have gone ahead through Eliezer Mayenda on Saturday, and that is nearly as good as it got in the final third at Turf Moor.

With Sunderland battering West Ham 3-0 in their opener, supporters will have been hoping for a statement performance against Burnley, but they disappointingly fell to a 2-0 defeat.

Premier League release statement explaining decision to disallow Burnley goal

It could have been even worse for the Mackems.

Michael Salisbury elected to disallow a Burnley goal with the scores still level, as striker Lyle Foster was judged to have tripped Jenson Seelt.

Despite it appearing as a tangle of legs in the final third, Video Assistant Referee John Brooks chose to stick with the on-field decision.

In a statement from the Premier League Match Centre on X, they wrote: “The referee’s call of no goal following a foul by Foster on Seelt was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Seelt was clearly tripped from behind.”

Sunderland have had a slight advantage in the first half

The incident occurred in the 18th minute, with both sides having played out an interesting tactical battle, in which the hosts got the better of in the end.

Burnley will have disagreed with the decision, but Le Bris’s side couldn’t take advantage as Sunderland failed to find their feet.

The Clarets were simply better than Sunderland in the second half and came away with a fairly comfortable 2-0 win, with Josh Cullen and Jaidon Anthony scoring.

Sunderland and Burnley to expect very few goals

Sunderland supporters will have been expecting a goal fest following their 3-0 win over West Ham.

Given Burnley’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham, the outcome looked likely, but fixtures between Scott Parker and Regis Le Bris haven’t previously headed many goals.

Sunderland vs Burnley’s overall records

There has been just one goal in the last three games between the two sides, with Sunderland the beneficiaries in the 1-0 win last season.

Therefore, one goal looked like it was always going to win it as the Mackems failed to retain their 100 per cent record and their opponents managed to get off the mark in the top tier.
