Poyet reveals talks with Sunderland chief in shock return admission – Exclusive

Gus Poyet left Sunderland 10 years ago, but has since spoken about making a potential return to the Stadium of Light.

Things are starting to look bright for Sunderland, who are now just 90 minutes away from making a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2016.

Sheffield United will be their opponents at Wembley after their semi-final triumph against Coventry City, in a game that Poyet has backed Sunderland to win.

Of course, Poyet enjoyed some spectacular moments himself on Wearside, and it seems as though he hasn’t yet closed the door on making a return.

Sunderland return may appeal to Poyet in the future

Since his departure, Poyet has had nothing but good things to say about Sunderland and his time as manager on Wearside, and when speaking to Mackem News, he revealed that he has been in constant contact with the Black Cats.

Courtesy of BetBrain, Poyet said: “When Juan Sartori came into the club, I’m in contact constantly. I mean, without going too far, the other day before the first semi-final, I tried to contact him because I hadn’t talked to him for a while. And when I saw that it was the first leg, I said, Come on. You know, like, come on. Come on. After the last few games of the Championship, come on, wake up

Sunderland won 3-2 on aggregate and secured a spot in the final.

“So it was a great moment to get in contact. And being in contact with Juan Sartori is being in contact with Sunderland. In the summer, I was in Spain. I travelled nearly 310 miles to go and watch a game, Sunderland against Forest in Alicante.

“So there’s always that contact. So when you are in contact all the time, there is more possibility with the club than if you weren’t. So we will see.”

Premier League football is 90 minutes away from Wearside

Sunderland have enjoyed a very, very good season, and they will not want to end that without anything to show for it.

However, if they are to avoid that situation, they will need to be at their best when they face Sheffield United at Wembley on 24 May.

Just eight days remain until the final, and what promises to be an electric occasion.
