Paul Merson does something he hates ahead of Sunderland showdown vs Newcastle United

Sunderland host Newcastle in the first Wear-Tyne derby of the season, and Paul Merson has made a questionable prediction.

Regis Le Bris has been given huge praise at Sunderland for the job he’s done so far, and supporters are feeling optimistic ahead of Sunday’s clash at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland’s brilliant start to the season sees them sitting ninth in the Premier League table, one point and three places above their arch-rivals.

Newcastle have struggled for consistency, winning just one match on their travels this season, although Merson believes hardly anything can split the two teams.

Paul Merson reluctantly predicts draw for Sunderland vs Newcastle

Sunderland’s 3-0 loss to Man City on 6 December was their heaviest in the Premier League under Le Bris, sparking some concern ahead of the derby.

The Magpies have only won one of their last 10 matches against the Black Cats, and it sets the perfect scene for what will be an emotionally-charged affair.

In a predictions column for Sportskeeda, Merson was complimentary of both sides, but self-admittedly noted the fact that he couldn’t pick a winner.

He said: “We say this every week, but Sunderland have been unbelievable, haven’t they? No matter how many times we say it, this performance on their return to the top-flight never loses its shine.”

“However, if you go player for player on paper, it’s a Newcastle win. I hate doing it, but I’m going to have to sit on the fence here. Draw for me.”

Sunderland vs Newcastle XI

Barring Habib Diarra, Sunderland arguably have their strongest team available for the match, and their frontline could certainly pose problems for Newcastle’s defence.

Newcastle’s defensive record offers huge hope for Sunderland

Newcastle’s players have certainly proven their worth over the last year as they won a major trophy and qualified for the Champions League.

However, Eddie Howe’s side have failed to gain any momentum ever since, and they’re clearly struggling at the back.

This is a complete contrast to Sunderland’s impressive defensive record, with the Black Cats conceding two goals fewer in the top flight.

Sunderland’s head-to-head record vs Newcastle:

Merson added: “Newcastle are scoring goals, but they just can’t keep a clean sheet. The last time they prevented a team from scoring was seven games ago against Athletic Club in the Champions League.”

The Magpies conceded two goals in midweek to Bayer Leverkusen, and Sunderland will be relishing the fact that they have had a full week to prepare for Sunday’s contest.
