Patterson shares Premier League prediction after ‘incredible’ Sunderland season
Anthony Patterson was one of the heroes for Sunderland as they triumphed in the play-offs, pulling off the save of his career to deny Kieffer Moore.
As the towering Welshman caught his header beautifully in the opening minutes, it seemed he had found the opening goal for Sheffield United at Wembley.
Replays of Patterson’s save still defy logic at how he was able to react to save a ball that had gone past him, with the Black Cats going on to win 2-1.
Now that Sunderland are a Premier League club once more, the man of the match has shared his predictions for the season ahead.

Patterson shares thoughts on Premier League and promotion
The close season has offered the Wearsiders time to reflect on their 2-1 Wembley win over Sheffield United and campaign as a whole.
One of the final’s stars was Patterson, but he has endured stick from supporters after some costly mistakes in the Championship.
Anthony Patterson’s 2024/25 Championship statistics | Total |
Appearances | 42 |
Clean sheets | 14 |
Penalties saved | 1/5 |
Goals conceded | 42 |
Saves | 92 |
Saves per game | 2.2 (69%) |
At one point, it looked like the Black Cats’ season was going to fizzle out without a purr, but they performed when it mattered.
Their play-off motto of ‘Til the End’ could not be more fitting after late goals from Dan Ballard and Tommy Watson secured victory during their final two games.
When asked by the Northern Echo (3 June) if Sunderland were capable of surviving in the Premier League, the goalkeeper was emphatic in his response.
He said: “Definitely, I think we’ve got the quality, you’ve seen that.
“I think we’ve got unreal amounts of quality, so let’s see what we can do in the Premier League next season…
“I’ve never seen a group like it, and it got us over the line – it’s been incredible.”

Sunderland likely to give Patterson competition
Although Patterson will likely retain his number one jersey, he is likely to have increased competition.
Simon Moore has been a worthy deputy and has performed well when required in Patterson’s absence.
However, the North East outfit have already been linked with bringing in Mexican international shot-stopper Luis Malagon.
This would be a smart move to ensure that Sunderland’s number one has pressure on him to keep his place between the sticks.
Patterson can be proud of his journey with the Black Cats as they prepare for another incredible season.
