Patterson followed by £6m ace – Three players Sunderland must sell this summer
Sunderland have a lot of work to do this summer in terms of offloading players.
Recruitment has been the word of the summer for Sunderland, and they have certainly done plenty of it ahead of their return to the Premier League.
Simon Adingra became the latest arrival at the Stadium of Light, joining on a five-year deal from Brighton, and seemingly replacing Tom Watson, who went the other way.
However, as much ambition as the Black Cats have shown in terms of incoming transfers, they still have a lot of work to do in regard to outgoing transfers, with several expected to move on in the next few weeks.

Anthony Patterson exit could make sense for Sunderland
Sunderland have made no secret of the fact that they want to sign a new goalkeeper this season, which would push Anthony Patterson down the pecking order.
Given the fact that he is homegrown, a sale would represent pure profit from a PSR perspective, which would then open the door for more spending elsewhere.
Anthony Patterson | Play-off final statistics (v Sheffield United) |
Saves | 2 |
Goals prevented | 0.71 |
High claims | 1 |
Patterson had a mixed campaign last time out, but his value will still be high given the fact that he is English, young and still very capable.
However, a season on the bench for Sunderland would only see that value drop, and if a new number one comes in, he could well be off.

Pierre Ekwah has no future at Sunderland
Pierre Ekwah has showcased his footballing ability since arriving from West Ham, but also demonstrated the lack of physicality in his game.
In this Regis Le Bris side, the latter is crucial to success, which ultimately led to his loan departure last summer.
Now back in the Premier League, the Black Cats simply can’t do with a midfielder of his ilk, and his sale would again provide a huge boost financially.
Saint-Etienne still hold an interest in the Frenchman, and were believed to have a £6million buy clause, with it looking all but nailed on that he will leave this summer.

Abdoullah Ba could be next out the door
When the name Abdoullah Ba pops up, the only comparison is marmite. Some rated him, others not so much.
However, it has certainly been more of the latter, and after a failed loan spell at Dunkerque, his future looks dull at Sunderland
It’s highly unlikely that the Black Cats would get any kind of significant fee for the attacker, but given the fact that he doesn’t fit under Le Bris’ plans, they need to find a way to get him off the books.
