Patrick Roberts earned mixed reviews for his performances at Sunderland last season.

Sunderland have had a remarkable start to the summer transfer window, and all of the indications suggest that they are far from over with their business.

The Black Cats have bolstered their squad significantly ahead of their return to the Premier League, and with over £100million spent, they have showcased their true ambitions.

While the addition of such high-quality players will speak for itself, it will also bring out the best in those around them, and Roberts will be one to benefit from it.

Simon Adingra will push Roberts on

Both Chemesdine Talbi and Simon Adingra have made the move to the Stadium of Light this summer, for a combined fee believed to be around £40m.

In reality, that is likely to push Roberts slightly down the pecking order at Sunderland, having spent the majority of the previous campaign in the starting 11.

However, as seen when Amad was playing on Wearside, Roberts is at his best when he has other players to play off, and this season will provide him with that.

Not just that, but the Premier League will be more suited to his style of play, as it will be to others, and it could be just what he needs to return to his best.

Sunderland have some talent already present

The Black Cats have signed and have been linked with some top-quality players from around Europe, and that will have slightly pushed the focus away from what is an already extremely talented squad.

The likes of Eliezer Mayenda, Dan Neil and several others will have a huge role to play in the top flight, having impressed in the Championship.

With a few more additions like those of late, Sunderland have a real chance of avoiding the drop and building towards a future in the Premier League.
