Patrick Roberts admits he is ‘very hard’ on himself in Sunderland form admission
Patrick Roberts has said he is “trying” to better himself for Sunderland and emphasised how he is “very hard” on himself after a tough spell on Wearside.
The wide man has come in for his fair share of criticism, some of it warranted while some of it has been wholly unjust but his equalising goal in the 1-1 draw against Bristol City ended his 18-month wait for a goal from open play.
Don Goodman previously said that Roberts remains key for Sunderland and his goal showcased just that.
And in an interview with the Sunderland Echo (12 December), Roberts responded to some of the criticism received.
“Ever since I’ve come here, I’ve been trying to do my best for Sunderland and every time I’m proud to wear that shirt,” the 27-year-old explained.
“I know I could probably do a lot more. I know myself. I’m very hard on myself, but at the same time, I’m trying to try my best. The first thing for me is Sunderland winning games, and I’ll take that any day over a goal and assist.
“I know you need those things to win games, so I understand that point as well and I’m hoping I can add more to my game. I should be. I do believe a lot of myself, and I want to reach levels I’ve never reached before.”
Bristol City goal should be a huge confidence boost for Roberts at Sunderland
As mentioned prior to that goal at the Stadium of Light on 10 December, it had been 18 months since he last found the net from open play, with only one penalty goal to claim outside of that.
There has never been any doubt over the technical ability that Roberts possesses. The only concern has been in regard to his goal output.
Joint with Romaine Mundle who has missed several weeks with injury, Roberts has contributed the most in the Black Cats side with two goals and four assists but everyone at the club knows he is capable of far, far more and that is where the frustration lies.

The goal on Tuesday should provide a massive confidence boost for the winger which in turn should provide an even bigger boost to Sunderland who will undoubtedly benefit from a confident Roberts.
Promotion remains the aim for Sunderland and his form could play a crucial role in achieving that.
In other Sunderland news, Luke O’Nien’s importance to the team was showcased on Tuesday.
