Who owns Sunderland?

Kyril Louis-Dreyfus first became involved with Sunderland back in February 2021, with the club languishing in League One under the ownership of Stewart Donald.

At the time, Louis-Dreyfus held a 41 per cent stake in the Black Cats, though as time has gone on, his stake has increased to 64 per cent, with Juan Sartori holding the remaining stake in the club.

Louis-Dreyfus has served as the Red and White chairman since taking over on Wearside, with the likes of Kristjaan Speakman and Stuart Harvey playing their own role in the day-to-day running of the club.

Who is Kyril Louis-Dreyfus?

Dreyfus was born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1997. At just 27 years old, he is the youngest owner of an English football club.

He is a Swiss-French businessman who was introduced to football at a young age through his late father, Robert Louis-Drefus, who was a majority shareholder at Ligue 1 giants Marseille. As a result of that, Kyril himself also owns a five per cent stake in the French club.

How much were Sunderland bought for?

Donald and Charlie Methven ran the club into the ground during their tenure on Wearside. Although their intentions were good, the application wasn’t.

After Ellis Short’s departure in 2018, Donald became the owner of Sunderland, with a reported £40million price tag on the club at the time.

At the time, Sunderland were not in the best position financially, though Short opeted to wipe the debt that was lingering over the Stadium of Light prior to Donald’s acquisition.

His spell turned sour quickly, with countless young prospects sold for next to nothing, while major cuts were made in the staffing areas, leading to several positions becoming redundant.

Fast forward to 2021, where Louis-Dreyfus became the majority shareholder, and things have started to improve massively on and off the pitch.

What is Louis-Dreyfus’ net worth?

It’s fair to say that Louis-Dreyfus has won over the majority of Sunderland fans since buying Donald and co out of the Wearside club, though there is still work to do to get the Black Cats back where they belong.

Sunderland have remained sensible with transfer fees, with the likes of Jobe Bellingham signing for a £3m figure, which has represented incredible value for money when it comes to performances on the pitch and potential resale value.

Sunderland chairman Louis-Dreyfus’ net worth is reportedly £2 billion, making him one of the wealthiest owners in the country.

He is the heir to his family assets worth around £4 billion.
