Omar Alderete the true Sunderland hero as new footage vs Newcastle United emerges
Omar Alderete played a huge part in Sunderland’s winning goal against Newcastle United last Sunday, but supporters haven’t realised it yet.
Sunderland claimed bragging rights in a 1-0 win over Newcastle at the weekend in a long-awaited Tyne-Wear derby day win.
The Mackems had to wait far too long for another Premier League clash against the Mags, but the wait was worth it.
Nick Woltemade’s own goal was the difference in the match, as Sunderland‘s defence stayed strong to keep a clean sheet.
Another angle of Woltemade’s beautiful header has been released, and it’s fair to say that Alderete may have been the root cause of the Newcastle striker’s nightmare moment.

Omar Alderete made Nick Woltemade score for Sunderland
Sunderland made many signings in the summer, with Alderete arguably one that went under the radar in terms of excitement.
The 28-year-old has been sensational for Regis Le Bris so far this season, and looks like one of the best pieces of business that the Black Cats have ever made.
The Premier League have released a slow-motion video of Woltemade’s own goal, in which Sunderland’s centre-back can be seen clapping right before the Newcastle striker headed into his own net.
Alderete may have actually put Woltemade off with the move and scared the German into losing his concentration at a crucial moment.
Alderete’s game by numbers vs Newcastle
Alderete has popped up with big moments for the Mackems this campaign, notably his winning headed goal against Nottingham Forest in September.
However, his defensive abilities cannot be overlooked, as his statistics versus the Mags were colossal.
| Minutes | Clearances | Interceptions | Aerial duels (won) | Rating |
| 90 | 5 | 2 | 8 (5) | 7.0 |
Le Bris has found success this season from a solid backline, and his Paraguayan defender deserves more respect.
Sunderland now face a difficult challenge with losing players due to the African Cup of Nations, but Alderete will still offer the Mackems a solid force to rely on at the back.
