Why Omar Alderete could prove to be a bargain buy for Sunderland
Sunderland are said to be closing in on the signing of Omar Alderete.
Saturday was a productive day for the Black Cats, who secured a 1-0 victory over Augsburg in their penultimate pre-season friendly.
Not only that, but it was reported that Sunderland agreed a deal to sign Alderete, who is said to be on his way to the Premier League.
Regis Le Bris made it clear that he wanted to see a new centre-back arrive this summer, and he looks set to get his wish with what could be another shrewd piece of business.

Alderete could be a better fit than Jhon Lucumi
Sunderland have been trying to sign Jhon Lucumi for some time now, but those efforts have amounted to very little over the last few weeks.
There is hope that Torbjorn Heggem’s move to Bologna could unlock the transfer, but having now made a move to sign Alderete, it seems unlikely that a second left-footed centre-back will be pursued.
It is believed to be a fee in the region of £10million for the Paraguayan, and based on his stats, it could be a bargain.

As showcased above, Alderete looks to be a much better defender, while Lucumi seems to have better ball-playing ability.
For Sunderland, the former will be more important, given the way they are likely to play in the Premier League.
Lucumi would have cost almost triple this summer, showcasing why this is a big addition if it goes through.

Sunderland still need more this summer
Alderete’s arrival will complete the priority business needed on Wearside, but more depth will still be needed.
However, with several weeks remaining in the window, time is still on the side of the Black Cats to achieve that.
