Northumbria Police to investigate incident ahead of Sunderland vs Newcastle as sanctions verdict shared

Sunderland’s first Premier League clash against Newcastle United for more than 10 years was always likely to create a feisty atmosphere, and so it proved.

On the pitch, Sunderland secured a famous 1-0 win over Newcastle in what was a chaotic game at the Stadium of Light.

Regis Le Bris’ side took the lead in remarkable fashion, as Magpies striker Nick Woltemade headed into his own net, sparking wild celebrations on Wearside.

Sunderland held on to take all three points, moving up to seventh in the Premier League and claiming the bragging rights in the North East.

Glass bottles thrown ahead of Sunderland vs Newcastle

Police costs were expected to be higher than usual for the Wear-Tyne derby to ensure the safety of fans in and around the Stadium of Light.

Both sets of supporters were under heavy supervision ahead of kick-off, kept apart from one another before entering the ground.

According to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards on X, there were a number of glass bottles thrown, but it is not yet clear which group were at fault.

However, the situation remained under control with the police out in their numbers to keep both Sunderland and Newcastle fans away from any trouble.

Keith Hackett doesn’t expect any sanctions after pre-match scenes

Sunderland against Newcastle is always a fierce affair, with tensions often spilling over into the two fanbases.

The scenes ahead of the game were always to be expected, and it seems that the two sets of supporters were kept under control by the big police presence.

However, former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett believes that the bottle-throwing situation will be investigated, and that arrests will be made if needed.

Speaking exclusively to Mackem News, Hackett said: “The bottle-throwing incidents outside the stadium will be dealt with by the police and obviously investigated to determine any arrests to be made.

However, Hackett added: “The clubs will not face sanctions by the football authorities.”
