Northern Ireland media react to Sunderland star Trai Hume’s ‘trademark’ display
Trai Hume has been impressing wherever he has played over the last few campaigns.
Dating back to Sunderland’s League One days, Hume has been a mainstay for the Black Cats and also for his country.
Hume captained Northern Ireland in their 3-0 victory over Luxembourg midweek and was named in the starting 11 once again for their World Cup qualifier against Germany.
The former world champions secured a 3-1 victory on Sunday night, though plenty of positives emerged from the clash, with praise for Hume.

Trai Hume rated 7/10 in Northern Ireland defeat vs Germany
While Hume will be competing with Lutsharel Geertruida at right-back for Sunderland, the 23-year-old typically plays as one of the three centre-backs for his country.
That’s where he featured on Sunday, in a back three consisting of him, Paddy McNair and Eoin Toal, with Connor Bradley and Justin Devenny occupying the wing-back roles.
Once again, the Sunderland star captained his country and ended the clash with more praise than criticism.
How Northern Ireland media reacted to his display
- “Worked hard to keep Germany at bay” – Belfast Live
- “Captained the side again, the Sunderland defender faced an attack with pace, but the team managed to weather a storm after the goal. Trademark all energy display from former Linfield ace” – Belfast Telegraph
To see Hume hold his own against some of the world’s greats will provide nothing but optimism for Regis Le Bris, who will be aware of the fact that he can play several positions if needed.

Trai Hume’s display in numbers vs Germany
Via Fotmob, Hume recorded an 89 per cent pass accuracy from 19 attempted passes, which is slightly less than that which he recorded in their victory against Luxembourg.
However, in typical Hume fashion, he won his only ground duel of the clash, while completing three clearances and four recoveries.
50 per cent of his aerial duels resulted in him winning the ball, with a total of six defensive contributions throughout the clash.
His performance was solid again, but for Le Bris, the main takeaway will be the fact that he will return from international duty unscathed ahead of Sunderland’s encounter with Crystal Palace this weekend.
