Nordi Mukiele return could ignite European hopes as Sunderland importance clear

Nordi Mukiele could make his return to the starting lineup when Sunderland host Tottenham.

The Frenchman has undoubtedly been one of Sunderland’s best players this season, and when taking into account the minimal fee paid to sign him, he’s also been one of the best signings in the league.

Whether he has played at centre-back alongside Dan Ballard or Omar Alderete, or at full-back in place of Trai Hume, Mukiele has shone.

However, his absence has certainly been felt in recent weeks.

Mukiele was named on the bench for the Black Cats’ latest victory over Newcastle, and this weekend could mark his return to the starting lineup.

Stats show how Sunderland have a gem with Nordi Mukiele

With four assists and a goal in the Premier League, Mukiele has shown a side to his game that very few expected upon his arrival at Sunderland.

The Frenchman has contributed at both ends of the pitch, as demonstrated by the fact that he has created 20 chances, but his strengths certainly lie with his defensive capabilities.

With 57 tackles so far this season, Mukiele ranks among the top 2.2 per cent of players for his position in the Premier League, with an average of 2.37 per game.

It’s also the joint-most of any Sunderland player alongside Hume.

The former PSG man also averages 6.24 duels won per 90, which again places him among the top 12.1 per cent of centre-backs in the top flight.

Should he be deemed fit enough to start the clash against Tottenham, his return would be a major boost, especially given what could be at stake at the Stadium of Light.

Where would Mukiele fit in at Sunderland now?

The typical option would be for Mukiele to replace Hume at right-back, but with Dan Ballard’s fitness yet to be assessed, he may have a different role.

The Northern Ireland international missed the win over Newcastle, as well as international duty, raising questions over his availability for Sunday’s clash.

However, Mukiele’s return will certainly be a timely one in that regard, with Regis Le Bris no doubt keen to get his squad back to full fitness ahead of the final run-in.
